Wine is a great pursuit for the curious mind: a vast field of possibility, limitless in scope and brimming with all manner of experience, from the scientific to the artistic, the humanistic to the historic, all the way up to the full-on esoteric. And the rewards of the search are similarly vast—wine has a bevy of lessons to teach, assuming we are open-minded and relentless enough to learn them.
Few have taken this more to heart than our guest for the evening, Rajat Parr. Sure, he’s a great sommelier. And yeah, his last book won a James Beard Award, one of two he’s got hanging somewhere. He also makes some pretty outstanding wine…after all, we wouldn’t be doing a winemaker dinner with him if he didn’t! But beyond the accolades and the growing acclaim for his wines, what has always impressed us most about Rajat is his absolutely insatiable thirst for knowledge. The guy literally lives and breathes wine, and has spent a great number of years questioning, tasting, studying and, for some time now, producing it.
These days, Raj is more a winemaker than anything else. And to that end, the knowledge he has gained from long tenure as one of the country’s leading restaurant wine buyers and one of its most astute students has proved invaluable. He makes wines that are deeply respectful of place, in a way many domestic wines are not, and emblematic of a precise and considered winemaking philosophy that has been informed by the techniques and mentorship of some of the greatest vignerons on the planet.
As always, the wines will be paired with a six-course menu crafted especially for the occasion by Chef Walter Manzke. There will be conversation, exploration, a lot of delicious food and drink, and perhaps a surprise or two along the way. We hope you can join us!
