October Wine Dinner: Two Terroirs, Two Cultures, Two Masters.

Two Terroirs, Two Cultures, Two Masters.
Bruce Tyrrell OF TYRRELL’S & Marc Hochar OF CHÂTEAU MUSAR

If you were to ask a group of wine folks to list the most underrated wineries on the planet, a great many would include one or both of the producers we are featuring in this very special dinner, and to have them both at the same table on the same night is an incredibly rare treat indeed.

Bruce Tyrrell is the fourth generation of his family to farm grapes and make wine in the Hunter Valley, and the eponymous family business was one of the first growers in the area to realize the epic potential of Semillon in this uniquely cool-climate region. His wines have become legendary – literally, even, as when his 1994 Vat #1 Semillon was awarded the ‘Legend of Wine’ award by Decanter Magazine, right alongside d’Yquem and the 1st Growths.

Marc Hochar’s family estate, Château Musar, is located a hemisphere away, in Lebanon. It was established in 1930 by Marc’s grandfather, Gaston, but it was Marc’s late father Serge who brought the winery to international prominence. Inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux but informed by the indigenous viticulture of Lebanon, the wines of Musar are singular and unimpeachable, and are particularly interesting with age.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to break bread with two masterful, legendary artisans. Both Bruce and Marc have graciously opened their libraries to us, which means we’ll be pouring some very special wines, including Musar back to the 1998 Rouge and the 1989 Blanc, as well as two old vintages of Tyrrell’s mythic Vat #1.  This is going to be a special one, folks. We hope to see you there!
