March Wine Dinner: A Night With Jean-Marc Burgaud
Our story with Jean-Marc Burgaud started over three years ago now; his wines appeared on République’s opening list. As a team we’ve looked forward to tasting each new vintage. These wines are a special part of our story and this coming week we are thrilled to finally have Jean-Marc join us.
Jean-Marc Burgaud started in 1989, the same year he married his wife, Christine. Both sets of their parents were winegrowers, so there was clearly something in the blood.
This superstar duo has quietly built up their vineyards to 19 hectares: 13 ha in Morgon, 5 ha in Beaujolais Villages and 1 ha in Régnié. “This is the maximum for me” Jean-Marc has said, modestly. While he has been offered the opportunity to grow, he believes that it’s important to stay precise and it’s that attention to detail that is reflected in his wines.
Jean-Marc’s farming practices come naturally. He’s not certified organic however he hasn’t used chemical insecticide for 10 years. Vinification is by traditional semi-carbonic maceration, the same method for all his wines. The result is quite special and has slowly garnered him much deserved praise.
