I first met Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer several years ago, on their first trip to the West Coast, when we hosted a Pian dell’Orino wine dinner at Osteria Mozza one evening back in 2011. It was a spectacular night, and a real revelation: Jan and Caroline were by turns knowledgeable and extremely entertaining, and what really came across was their unflappable obsession with making the best wine possible. They spend the vast majority of their time in the vineyards, tending to their vines and their soil with a fastidiousness that borders on the obsessive; the finished wines, brimming with energy and tension, reflect this precise, detail-oriented approach.
It’s not all that surprising that Jan and Caroline take their work so seriously. They are intensely-focused craftspeople, and furthermore, their estate is located in what many believe to be the greatest section of the zone, adjacent to the now-mythical winery of the late Franco Biondi-Santi. Like their masterful and famously-meticulous neighbor, Jan and Caroline invest massive amounts of energy into deepening their understanding of the various terroirs of the Montalcino area, and in sharing that knowledge with various like-minded growers. They are a founding member of SPA (Sangiovese per Amico), a small group of producers who, in the words of their manifesto, are committed to ‘create, nurture and keep alive [the] cultural landscape [of Montalcino]’. They have split with the major consortium of growers, and in spite of overt hostility from the big, more market-minded organization, have remained undeterred from continuing their very important work.
Needless to say, we really love this estate. And we aren’t alone – Antonio Galloni, among others, has situated Pian dell’Orino in the top-tier of producers in Montalcino, and the wines themselves as equaled only by ‘a handful of top domaines in the world’. We fully agree. These are pretty extraordinary wines from an equally extraordinary place.
That in mind, it’s with great pleasure that we invite you to a very exciting dinner we are hosting to celebrate Jan and Caroline’s return to LA. We’ll be serving a range of their wines – nine in all – from a mini-vertical of their superb Rosso all the way up to their single-vineyard Brunello Riserva wines.
